July is the second of the Passport series with the “Wines of Italy” on sale. The Premium 6 week wines on sale are Barolo: large and robust, this style is the one that lovers of big wines are looking for. This Barolo is rich in flavour and deep in colour, with a rounded oak aroma that lingers on the finish. Not surprisingly, Barolo is a consistently popular offering year in and year out.
Valpolicella: Italian style wine with a delicate bouquet and a rich texture. Ruby red colour. Fragrant and fruity. Pinot Grigio: the uniquely Italian version of the well known Pinot Gris grape, picked earlier in Italy than in all other regions and well before its characteristic loss of acidity at ripening, for a bright, crisp, dry white wine with a gentle perfume and a detectable spiciness. Fresh, fragrant and lively, its flavours include a certain flintiness with hints of citrus and almonds. $20 off the regular price.
BONUS! Our two most popular grape skin wines are $25 off this month. Italy’s most powerful wine, Winexpert’s Selection Italian Amarone with Grape Skins is an intense, complex wine, with a wide array of flavours and aromas. Deep, nearly opaque red, this heavyweight exudes aromas of sour cherries, dark chocolate, stewed plums, dried fruits, anise, raisins, bitter almond, tobacco, leather and molasses, and has a spicy-earthy bittersweet finish that goes on and on, from the huge volume of tannins. And Winexpert’s Selection International Italian Brunello with Grape Skins is a dark-cherry colour with highlights of gorgeous ruby-garnet. The red wine on sale this month is Italian Barolo: medium in body with a luminous dark cherry colour Barolo has rich, spicy fruit and delivers the true character of the grape and land. Typical flavours are cherries, violets, black licorice, truffles and it finishes with rich, chewy, deep and long-lasting flavour. Burly, assertive ‘chewy’ wine, it is not for the faint of heart, but for those seeking intensity and complexity, there is nothing else like Barolo. The white wine on sale this month is Italian Pinot Grigio: The Italians have their own way with the Pinot Gris grape variety, and in the process they create a special magic with it that’s unmatched elsewhere in the wine world. Though dry in character and with a pleasant zip of acidity, this Pinot Grigio shows off a pleasant floral fragrance and tremendous fruit flavours, making it the perfect picnic accompaniment. Both are $15 off the regular price.
Vintners Reserve is our 4 week wine kit, the industry’s first. The red wine on sale this month is Cabernet Sauvignon: Deep ruby, with black currant and cedar on the nose. The white wine on sale this month is Sauvignon Blanc: The flavour is full and dry, with a fruity, herbaceous character, which finishes crisp and clean. A versatile wine which handles a wide range of herbs, spices and flavourings. Both are $10 off the regular price.
